About Relais & Châteaux
Born on the road to the Riviera.
Relais & Châteaux began in May 1954, when eight French hotels along the Route Nationale 7 between Paris and Nice joined forces as the Route du Bonheur, the road to happiness. Founders included Marcel and Nelly Tilloy of La Cardinale. The association grew across Europe, reached North America and Japan in 1975, and today gathers around 580 independently owned hotels and restaurants in 65 countries. Members are chef-led country houses, inns and châteaux, many run by the same family for generations, united by serious cooking and a deep attachment to their land.
Participating Relais & Châteaux members offer travel-adviser benefits on top of the house's own rate. Booking this way attaches them to your stay, and the adviser can link several houses into a driving route of your own. It suits travellers who plan holidays around the table, and who prefer a family-run house to a big hotel.
