Late checkout at luxury hotels: how to get it, and the brands that guarantee 4pm
Most hotels give you an hour or two if you ask well; a few loyalty tiers and booking programmes make 4pm a rule. Here is how late checkout works, brand by brand.
The last morning of a good hotel stay is too often spent watching the clock. A late checkout turns it back into part of the holiday: a slow breakfast, a final swim, a shower before the airport. Most hotels will give you an hour or two if you ask well. A few loyalty tiers and booking programmes make 4pm a rule rather than a favour. Here is how it works, brand by brand.
The short answer
- Standard checkout at most luxury hotels is 11am or noon. A request for 1pm or 2pm is usually granted.
- A guaranteed 4pm comes with Marriott Bonvoy Platinum and above, Hilton Honors Diamond Reserve, InterContinental Ambassador (at InterContinental hotels) and Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts bookings, with exceptions noted below.
- When the answer is no, a paid late checkout or a day-use room is often worth it, especially before an evening flight.
What time is late checkout?
Hotels set their own standard checkout, usually 11am in resorts and noon in city hotels, and it is printed on your booking confirmation. “Late checkout” means anything after that: 1pm and 2pm are the everyday requests, 4pm is the generous one, and anything later is usually charged as part of an extra night. The exception is Peninsula Time at The Peninsula hotels, which allows departures as late as 10pm, subject to availability.
How to ask
The request that is easiest to grant is early, specific and reasonable.
- Ask before you arrive, or on your first evening. The front office plans tomorrow’s departures and arrivals the night before; a request made then can be built into the plan. A request made at 11am on the day competes with the housekeeping schedule.
- Ask for a time, not “as late as possible”. “Could we keep the room until 2pm?” is a yes-or-no question. An open request makes the hotel guess.
- Give the reason, if there is one. An evening flight, a late meeting or a long drive ahead are all reasons a front office understands.
- Confirm it in writing. A message through the hotel’s app or an email reply means the request survives a change of shift.
If you hold status with the brand, say so when you ask. Many tiers include late checkout, and the hotel will check its availability for you first.

Late checkout by brand
From each loyalty programme’s own published terms. “On request” means you need to ask; “subject to availability” means the hotel can still say no.
| Programme | Tier | Late checkout | The fine print |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marriott Bonvoy (incl. Ritz-Carlton, St. Regis, W, JW Marriott) | Gold | Up to 2pm | Subject to availability |
| Marriott Bonvoy | Platinum, Titanium, Ambassador | 4pm, guaranteed | Subject to availability at resort and convention hotels and Design Hotels; Ritz-Carlton Reserve and the vacation clubs are excluded |
| World of Hyatt | Discoverist, Explorist | 2pm, on request | Subject to availability at resorts and casino hotels |
| World of Hyatt | Globalist | 4pm, on request | Subject to availability at resorts and casino hotels; not at Hyatt Vacation Club |
| Hilton Honors (incl. Waldorf Astoria, Conrad, LXR) | All tiers to Diamond | On request | Subject to availability |
| Hilton Honors | Diamond Reserve | 4pm, guaranteed | On qualifying stays |
| IHG One Rewards (incl. Six Senses, Regent, Kimpton) | All tiers | Up to 2pm | On request, subject to availability |
| InterContinental Ambassador | Ambassador | 4pm, guaranteed | At InterContinental hotels only |
| ALL Accor (incl. Raffles, Fairmont, Sofitel) | Platinum, Diamond | On request | Subject to availability; no fixed time |
| Shangri-La Circle | Jade | Until 4pm, on request | Subject to availability |
| Shangri-La Circle | Diamond | Until 6pm, on request | Subject to availability; a few hotels are excluded |
Aman, Four Seasons, Rosewood, Mandarin Oriental and The Peninsula have no points programme, so there is no tier to rely on. At those hotels late checkout comes from asking well or from how you book.
Skip the status ladder
Elite status is earned slowly. Marriott Bonvoy Platinum, where the guaranteed 4pm begins, takes 50 qualifying nights in a calendar year; Hilton Honors Diamond takes 50; World of Hyatt’s top tier, Globalist, takes 60. That is a lot of hotel nights with one brand to secure a 4pm checkout, and it does nothing for you at Aman, Four Seasons, Rosewood or The Peninsula, which have no points programmes at all.
Preferred-partner programmes reach the same place from the other direction. A booking made through The Luxe Destination Privileges arrives with the treatment hotels give their best guests, from your very first stay: daily breakfast for two, a hotel credit, and the upgrade, early check-in and late checkout already requested on the reservation, so they are considered before anyone else’s. At The Peninsula and Shangri-La the upgrade is guaranteed when you book, and at Hyatt Privé hotels it is confirmed within 24 hours of arrival. And because these are the hotel group’s own programmes, Marriott, Hyatt, Hilton, IHG, Accor and Shangri-La still credit your points and elite nights.
Booking programmes that include it
Card and adviser programmes can attach late checkout to the reservation itself, so the hotel knows before you arrive.
| Programme | Late checkout |
|---|---|
| Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts | 4pm, guaranteed (book and pay through American Express Travel) |
| The Peninsula PenClub | Peninsula Time: as late as 10pm, subject to availability, with your times given 24 hours ahead |
| Jumeirah Passport to Luxury | Until 4pm |
| Rosewood Elite, Hyatt Privé, Hilton for Luxury, Belmond Bellini Club, Rocco Forte Knights | Priority, so your request is considered first |
| Aman, Shangri-La, Accor, Kempinski, Leading Hotels of the World, Virtuoso and others | If available, flagged on the booking |
A flag on the booking is quietly powerful. The request is already in the system when the front office plans the day, which is when late departures are decided. For more on how these programmes work, see our guide to hotel perks and The Luxe Destination Privileges.
When the hotel says no
Late checkout is hardest on full nights: weekends in city hotels, festive weeks and high season in resorts, and any day when a large group is arriving. When the room is genuinely needed, a good hotel still finds a way to look after you:
- Paid late checkout. Many hotels sell an extra few hours, and Marriott offers a paid guaranteed late checkout at some properties. Compare the price with what the extra hours are worth to you.
- A day-use room. For an evening flight, a second, smaller room for the afternoon can cost less than holding your own.
- Bags, spa and lounge. Most luxury hotels will hold your luggage and let you use the pool, gym and spa changing rooms after checkout. If you have club access, the lounge often stays open to you until you leave.

How we do it
We ask for a late checkout when we book, not when we leave, and we say why. On stays booked through Privileges the request is already on the reservation, which is why we rarely spend a last morning packing. At The Peninsula we send our times 24 hours ahead so that Peninsula Time can be arranged, and where we hold top-tier status we compare it with the programme rather than assume one beats the other.
Frequently asked questions
Is it possible to get a late checkout at a hotel?
Almost always for an hour or two if you ask the day before. Later than 2pm depends on how full the hotel is, unless your status or booking programme guarantees it.
How do I get late checkout without paying?
Ask early, ask for a specific time and give your reason. Status with the brand, or a booking made through a programme that includes late checkout, makes the answer far more likely to be yes.
Is a 4pm late checkout guaranteed with elite status?
At some brands. Marriott Bonvoy Platinum and above, Hilton Honors Diamond Reserve and InterContinental Ambassador guarantee 4pm, with exceptions at resorts and certain hotels. World of Hyatt Globalists receive 4pm on request.
How much does a late checkout cost?
It varies by hotel and by day. Some charge a fixed fee for a few extra hours; others charge part of a night. Ask the hotel, and compare it with a day-use room if you only need the afternoon.
Can I get a late checkout on a prepaid or discounted rate?
Usually, if the hotel has space, though guests on flexible rates and partner bookings tend to be considered first. Status benefits generally apply whatever the rate.
What is Peninsula Time?
The Peninsula Hotels’ arrangement allowing arrival from 6am and departure as late as 10pm, subject to availability. It applies to bookings made directly or through Peninsula’s travel partners, with your times given 24 hours ahead; blackout dates apply.
Loyalty terms change; the rules above are taken from each programme’s own published terms as of October 2026, and individual hotels can apply their own policies. The Luxe Destination Privileges is our partnership with our booking partner, Classic Travel, and we may earn a commission when you book through it. It never changes what we write.
