Mandarin Oriental, Desaru Coast earns One MICHELIN Key in its first year
The Kerry Hill-designed resort of 44 pool suites earns a MICHELIN Key within its first year under the Mandarin Oriental flag, with a beach club arriving in November.
Mandarin Oriental, Desaru Coast has been awarded One MICHELIN Key, with the MICHELIN Guide describing the resort as “a very special stay”. The recognition comes within the property’s first year under the Mandarin Oriental flag, and it makes this the first resort in Desaru Coast to receive the distinction. A second development follows in November 2026, when Lumare Beach House & Sports Club opens on the resort’s shoreline as Mandarin Oriental’s first beach club in Southeast Asia.
The timing is worth noting. The resort became Mandarin Oriental, Desaru Coast in January 2026, and the Key has followed within months of the change of name. For a property still establishing itself under a new flag, an independent mark from the MICHELIN Guide carries real weight. It also gives this stretch of the Johor coastline its first Key-recognised resort, a useful reference point for travellers weighing up where to stay within reach of Singapore.
Much of the resort’s character comes from its setting. It occupies 128 acres of rainforest along an unspoilt shoreline on the South China Sea, and it is one of the final works of the architect Kerry Hill. The scale is deliberately small for a site of that size: the resort has 44 suites, which leaves generous space between guests and the landscape around them.
Each of those suites spans at least 105 sq m. Every one has a shaded veranda, a private plunge pool and a secluded courtyard, looking out over either the rainforest or the sea. For larger parties there is also an exclusive four-bedroom pool villa, which suits a family or a group of friends who want to stay together under one roof while keeping the privacy of the wider resort.
The resort is led by Fiona Hagan, an Australian hotelier who has been General Manager since May 2026. She joined from Shangri-La Rasa Ria, Kota Kinabalu, bringing experience of another Malaysian coastal resort to Desaru Coast. Her arrival came a few months after the rebrand, and the Key has been awarded during her first months in charge.

Lumare Beach House & Sports Club is the resort’s next chapter. Its inspiration is Northern Mediterranean coastal living, and its culinary concept centres on elemental fire cooking and unhurried dining by the sea. The pairing of open flame and long, slow meals on the shoreline gives the beach club a distinct identity within the resort, and a clear reason to linger over lunch.
The facilities are built for days spent outdoors. Lumare has a beachfront pool and a dedicated children’s pool, along with padel, tennis and marine sports. As the day ends, the mood shifts: evenings bring music and guest DJ sets. Taken together, the programme gives the shoreline a full arc from morning sport to late dinner, which broadens the appeal of the resort for families, for active travellers and for anyone who enjoys a social evening by the water after a quiet day in a private suite.
For travellers planning ahead, the practical picture is straightforward. The Key is in place now, so stays booked today already come with the MICHELIN Guide’s recognition. Lumare is scheduled to open in November 2026; the announcement names the month only, so those building a trip around the beach club should confirm its opening date with the resort before fixing travel. From then on, a stay here combines the seclusion of a plunge-pool suite set in rainforest with a beach club offering sport, fire-cooked food and music on the South China Sea.
The combination of a recent rebrand, an early Key and a new beach club marks Mandarin Oriental, Desaru Coast as a resort in a period of considered growth. With its small count of large suites, a Kerry Hill design and a shoreline about to gain its most social space, it is a property to keep on the list for the months ahead.
