Our full video tour of The Westin Jakarta — two hours and eighteen minutes, from the Ambassador Suite to the Westin Club, Heavenly Spa and dinner at Henshin.

Jakarta is a city best understood from above. At street level it is traffic and humidity and the constant negotiation of getting anywhere at all; from the 66th floor it resolves into something else entirely — a grid of towers fading into haze, the Java Sea somewhere beyond, and, after dark, a carpet of light that runs to the horizon in every direction. That view is the argument for staying at the Westin, and it is a strong one.

The Westin Jakarta occupies the upper half of Gama Tower on Jalan H.R. Rasuna Said, in the Kuningan business district. Guest rooms begin at level 53 and the restaurants sit above them, not below. It is a piece of positioning no competitor can copy.

I stayed in the Ambassador Suite, 166 square metres on the 66th floor, at a rate of around IDR 21,000,000 a night — roughly US$1,300. What follows is the full picture: the suite room by room, all four services in the Westin Club lounge, the breakfast buffet at Seasonal Tastes, a Nikkei tasting menu at Henshin two floors up, and the wellness floor at level 50. Every photograph here is my own, taken during the stay.

Arrival and the Approach

Gama Tower announces itself well before you reach it. The Westin name sits high on the glass, and the drive-in is set back from Rasuna Said behind a landscaped forecourt — a genuine relief in a city where many hotel entrances are a lay-by on a six-lane road. The arrival sequence is covered end to end, so you step from the car into shade and walk to the lifts without ever being in the sun.

The ground floor is a transit space rather than a destination: you check the directory, take the express lift, and arrive at the sky lobby with the city already spread out below. The in-lift board is worth reading on the way up, because it explains the whole building — guest rooms on 53 to 66, the Westin Club on 65, Seasonal Tastes on 51, Henshin on 67 to 69, and the spa, gym and pool together on 50.

Check-in and the Sky Lobby

Check-in is unhurried and handled seated, which suits a hotel where most arrivals have just come off a long flight and a longer taxi ride. The lobby leans into Indonesian craft — carved screens, a sculptural ceiling piece, patterned carpet in deep reds — without tipping into theme. It reads as a business hotel that has decided to be beautiful.

The Ambassador Suite

The Ambassador is the second-largest room in the hotel: 166 square metres, behind only the 270-square-metre Presidential and well ahead of the Junior (68) and Executive (92) suites. The layout is genuinely residential — a separate living room, a separate dining area, a bedroom with its own sitting corner, a main bathroom, a guest powder room, and a dressing hallway connecting the two halves.

The detail that mattered most turned out to be an accident of floor plan. The suite is on level 66 and the Westin Club sits directly below it on 65 — one flight down rather than a lift ride across the building, which changes how you use it. You drop in for a coffee because it is a minute from your door, not because you have decided to make a trip of it.

The Living Room

The living room runs along the window wall, which means the city is present from every seat. There is a deep L-shaped sofa, a pair of armchairs, a dining table for six, a desk, and a kitchenette with a sink — enough that you could work a full day here without going downstairs. A Bose sound system sits on the console, and an espresso machine on the counter.

The welcome amenity was more considered than the usual bowl of apples: a tiered plate of Indonesian sweets alongside fresh fruit, replaced during the stay rather than left to age on the table.

The Bedroom

The bedroom is separated from the living room by the dressing hallway, so it stays genuinely quiet. The Westin Heavenly Bed is the centrepiece — the brand’s signature, and still one of the better beds in the business — dressed in white and, on arrival, scattered with rose petals and a folded towel swan. There is a television opposite, a minibar in the corner, and a sitting area angled at the window.

Waking up here is the reason to book the room. The windows run floor to ceiling on two sides, and at that height the weather happens below you — I watched a rainstorm move across the south of the city one afternoon without a drop reaching the glass.

The Main Bathroom

The main bathroom is finished in pale marble, with double onyx vessel sinks on a long counter, a jacuzzi tub, a separate walk-in shower and a Japanese-style toilet with a wall-mounted control panel. Westin’s White Tea amenities come in full-size pump bottles rather than miniatures.

The dressing hallway between the bedroom and the living room holds the wardrobes, the safe, robes and slippers, hanging rails and an ironing board, plus a makeup desk with its own mirror and light. Putting all of it in the connecting corridor keeps both main rooms clear of luggage clutter, which is the sort of planning you notice on a longer stay.

The Westin Club Lounge

Club access comes with the suite, and the lounge on level 65 runs four distinct services through the day: coffee and pastries on arrival, afternoon tea, evening canapés with free-flow drinks, and breakfast. Because it was one floor below the room, we used all four — which is rarely how club lounges actually get used.

Afternoon Tea

Afternoon tea is the prettiest service of the day. Savoury bites and small pastries are set out along a marble counter, with TWG teas in a presentation box and a coffee machine alongside. The room is quiet at that hour and every seat faces the windows.

Evening Service

Evening service is where the lounge earns its keep. This is not a token bowl of nuts — it is a genuine spread: hot dishes in copper pots, a carving of cold cuts and cheeses, sushi and maki, salads, a bread station, and a dessert table with whole cakes and tarts. Drinks are free-flow, wine included. You could reasonably treat it as dinner, and on the first night we did.

Breakfast and the Business Corner

Breakfast is served in the lounge as an alternative to Seasonal Tastes — quieter, smaller, and a reasonable choice if you want to be out of the building quickly. The lounge also keeps a business corner with a computer and printer, and there is a private meeting room off the main space.

Seasonal Tastes

Seasonal Tastes is the all-day dining restaurant on level 51, and the breakfast buffet there is one of the largest I have worked through in Indonesia. It is arranged in island stations around a 360-degree glass perimeter, so you circle the room and the city circles with you.

The range is the point. There is a full Indonesian section — nasi goreng, soto, sambals in a dozen varieties, ketupat — running alongside a Japanese counter with sushi and sashimi, a cold cuts and cheese room, an Indian station, a bakery, a pastry counter, a fruit display, a juice bar, and eggs cooked to order. A hydroponic herb garden grows against one wall and is harvested into the dishes.

Service keeps pace with the volume. Coffee arrives without being chased, plates are cleared quickly, and the à la carte additions — the eggs Benedict and the French toast in particular — come out properly hot rather than assembled and abandoned under a pass light.

The buffet is not the whole offer. There is a separate breakfast à la carte card, cooked to order and included in the breakfast rate rather than charged on top — worth knowing, because most guests never ask for it. The nasi goreng kampung from that card, which arrives with chicken satay, a fried egg and prawn crackers, is a better plate of food than anything you will build yourself from the Indonesian station.

Through the rest of the day Seasonal Tastes runs an à la carte menu that is considerably broader than a hotel all-day-dining list usually is — Indonesian classics, an Indian section cooked by a dedicated chef, pizza and pasta, sandwiches, a grill, and a lighter Eat Well page priced by half or full portion. Prices sit where you would expect for a five-star tower in Kuningan: most main courses land between Rp 130,000 and Rp 325,000, with the grill running higher.

We ate off it at lunch. The grill plates arrive with potato purée, charred asparagus and carrot and a smoked tomato jam, and they are properly cooked rather than held — which, in a room built around a buffet, is not a given.

Henshin

Henshin occupies the top three floors: the bar and lounge on 67, the restaurant with its open kitchen on 68, and private dining on 69. The kitchen is Nikkei — Japanese technique carrying Peruvian flavour — and it is the most ambitious food in the building by a distance. The bar runs to midnight on weeknights and 2am on Friday and Saturday; the restaurant serves 5pm to 11pm daily.

We ate the Herencia tasting menu. It opens with abrebocas — assorted small bites — then moves through a tuna tiradito with Peruvian yellow chilli, citrus, avocado and roasted sweet potato; a trio of nigiri; and a kakuni gyoza of slow-braised duck with shiitake and parmesan. Mains are a lobster chupe and an Australian Black Angus beef yakiniku with miso potato purée. Dessert is a tiramisu tres leches, then small sweets.

The room does a great deal of the work. At that height, after dark, the windows become the decoration and the kitchen is sensible enough to plate against it rather than compete with it.

The heritage tasting menus run between IDR 1,500,000++ and IDR 1,900,000++ per guest — roughly US$95 to US$120 — depending on the selection.

Daily Treats and the Champagne Lounge

Two smaller rooms share the check-in floor, level 52. Daily Treats is the café — pastries, cakes and coffee to take away or eat in, with a wall of windows and a scattering of low seating. The Champagne Lounge next door is the quieter proposition, a handsome panelled room that fills up in the early evening.

Wellness on Level 50

The entire 50th floor is given over to wellness: Heavenly Spa, the WestinWORKOUT studio, the changing rooms with sauna and hot bath, and the pool. Keeping them together on one floor makes the whole thing usable — you can swim, steam and train without crossing the hotel in a robe.

The Pool

The pool is indoors and glass-walled, running along the edge of the building with loungers set against the windows. Swimming lengths 50 floors up, with Jakarta laid out beside you, is the single most memorable thing about the hotel after the suite itself.

Heavenly Spa

Heavenly Spa runs to 1,750 square metres with six treatment rooms, a reception area, relaxation lounge and vitality pool. The treatment rooms are warm and low-lit, and the ones on the outer wall have the view — an unusual luxury for a massage table.

I took the hydrotherapy baths, which at 90 minutes is the spa’s signature treatment: a Heavenly Spa massage followed by a wine-pouring bath. It is Rp 1,150,000 for one, or Rp 2,200,000 for two — around US$71 and US$136 — and the couples room, with two beds at the window, is the one to ask for. The hot stones massage runs the same 90 minutes at the same Rp 1,150,000, and the Bali coffee scrub is Rp 675,000 for 45 minutes, which is the cheapest way into the floor if you only want an hour to yourself. Prices are before tax and service, as everywhere in the building.

The full treatment list is longer than the three above, and the spa does not publish it online — ask at reception on 50 rather than guessing from the in-room compendium.

Sauna and Hot Bath

The changing rooms hold a cedar-lined sauna and a hot bath, both included for in-house guests. The hot bath sits against the glass, which is a considerably better arrangement than the windowless basement version most city hotels offer.

WestinWORKOUT

The gym is open 24 hours to in-house guests and is properly equipped — a full run of cardio machines along the window, free weights, resistance machines and a functional training rig. It is a real gym rather than the apologetic treadmill-and-a-bench arrangement that passes for one in many city hotels.

The Verdict

The Westin Jakarta is a hotel with one enormous structural advantage and the good sense to build everything else around it. Height is not a gimmick here: it shapes the pool, the spa, the restaurants and every room, and no other five-star in the city can offer it. The Ambassador Suite is genuinely residential rather than simply large, and the accident of sitting one floor above the Club lounge made the club benefits real in a way they usually are not.

Where it sits slightly behind the very best in the region is in the softer register — the service is efficient and warm but not anticipatory, and the public spaces below the sky lobby are functional rather than special. For a business traveller, or for a weekend in Jakarta where the hotel is the point, it is very hard to beat.

The basics, done right

  • The Westin Heavenly Bed, still one of the best in the business
  • Blackout curtains that genuinely black out
  • Fast, stable Wi-Fi throughout the tower
  • A Japanese-style toilet with a wall control panel
  • Full-size White Tea amenities rather than miniatures
  • A 24-hour gym that is actually equipped

The luxuries worth noting

  • A 166 sqm suite with separate living and dining rooms
  • Double onyx vessel sinks and a jacuzzi tub
  • Bose sound system and an espresso machine in the living room
  • Club lounge one floor below the suite, with four services a day
  • An indoor pool and hot bath 50 floors up, both glass-walled
  • Henshin’s Nikkei tasting menu two floors above your room
