Hyatt Hotels Corporation and Extell Development Company have announced plans for The StandardX Times Square, a hotel of approximately 1,800 rooms at 255 West 45th Street in Manhattan’s Theater District. The announcement was made on 28 October 2026. The hotel will be the first The StandardX property in North America, and it is anticipated to open in the second half of 2028.

The building has been conceived as far more than a place to sleep. The plans include an enclosed free-fall thrill ride, an observation deck more than 1,000 feet above Manhattan and a rooftop pool. Alongside these sits what the partners call a substantial lineup of restaurants, bars and nightlife venues, among them a rooftop bar and lounge. The hotel, in other words, is meant to be a destination in its own right, with its highest floors given over to views, water and evening life above one of the busiest neighbourhoods in New York.

To understand the brand, it helps to start with its parent. The StandardX is the younger sibling of The Standard, and Hyatt describes it as simpler, more casual and more accessible. Rooms are simpler and service is more streamlined. Readers who know The Standard will recognise the family; this is the same label in a pared-back, easier-going format, built for guests who spend most of their time out in the city and expect the hotel to keep pace with them.

Hyatt and Extell are clear about the status of this particular address. The Times Square hotel is a flagship, designed specifically for this site, and the partners have said it will not serve as the model for future StandardX hotels. Its scale, its thrill ride and its observation deck belong to this building alone, which makes it the clearest statement yet of what the brand can be at full volume.

The design will take its cue from New York’s theatrical character, with bold colour, sculptural forms and reflective finishes. At 255 West 45th Street that reference is close to literal: the hotel sits within the Theater District, and the visual language described in the announcement is that of the stage, made for a building that will be seen and photographed as much as it is stayed in. Fuller detail on the design, the dining and nightlife concepts, and the creative collaborations behind them will be revealed later.

Scale is the defining fact here. At approximately 1,800 rooms, The StandardX Times Square belongs to a different category from the intimate hotels we usually review, and it should be read accordingly. This is a large, lively, lifestyle-led hotel positioned for accessibility and energy, and its appeal will rest on the rooftop, the deck and the nightlife programme as much as on the rooms themselves.

For the discerning traveller, the practical position is simple. With an anticipated opening in the second half of 2028, there is nothing to book yet, and the details that will decide whether the hotel suits a particular kind of trip are still to come: the restaurants, the bars, the creative partners and the finished interiors. Those planning a New York visit for late 2028 or beyond may wish to keep the address in mind, perhaps for a drink at the rooftop bar or an evening on the observation deck while staying elsewhere in the city.

We will return to The StandardX Times Square once Hyatt and Extell share the design, dining and nightlife concepts, and once a firmer opening date is set.
