IHG Hotels & Resorts has entered a partnership with American Express in Mainland China. Eligible American Express Platinum Cardmembers there can now register for a complimentary match to IHG One Rewards Platinum Elite status, and a limited-time cashback offer applies at the group’s luxury and lifestyle hotels. The partnership was announced in Shanghai on 22 October 2026.

The mechanics are simple. Eligible Cardmembers register for the status match, and Platinum Elite is then valid through 31 December 2027. Members who complete 10 qualifying nights between 15 September 2026 and 31 December 2027 can extend their Platinum Elite status through 31 December 2028. The qualifying window opened before the announcement itself, and it runs for more than fifteen months. For a frequent traveller, 10 nights across that period is a modest threshold, and meeting it turns a complimentary match into three full calendar years of recognition.

Platinum Elite benefits include 60% bonus points on qualifying stays, a welcome amenity, room upgrades and late check-out, all subject to availability. The bonus points add up over time. Upgrades and late check-out are the benefits a guest notices on the day: a better room on arrival and a slower departure, especially at the end of a long-haul trip. All of these benefits depend on availability, so they remain at the hotel’s discretion on any given night. Even so, they are the courtesies that set apart a recognised guest at a well-run property.

The second part of the partnership is a cashback offer with a firm end date. Until 31 December 2026, eligible Cardmembers who spend at least RMB 1,800 at participating IHG properties receive RMB 370 cashback, a return of just over a fifth on a qualifying spend at that level. The offer covers Regent, Vignette Collection, Kimpton and select InterContinental hotels in Greater China. It also applies at participating luxury brands in Australia, Japan and Singapore, which brings year-end trips beyond the mainland within its scope.

Scale
IHG One Rewards has more than 160 million members; over 7,000 hotels worldwide

The selection of brands shows where IHG is aiming. Regent is the group’s most rarefied name, Vignette Collection gathers independently minded hotels under one roof, Kimpton brings a design-led lifestyle sensibility, and InterContinental remains the flagship of its international luxury tier. Pairing these brands with the Platinum card signals clearly which guests the partnership is meant to attract: travellers who already choose premium hotels and pay for them on a premium card.

There is also a broader point. According to IHG, this is the first time IHG One Rewards has partnered with an international card network on a status match in Mainland China. With more than 160 million members worldwide and a portfolio of over 7,000 hotels, the programme is among the largest in the industry. A status match aimed this precisely at one market’s premium cardholders is a deliberate move, and it reflects the weight IHG places on affluent Chinese travellers, at home and abroad.

For readers outside Mainland China, the offer is out of reach: eligibility rests on holding an American Express Platinum Card issued there. Cardmembers who qualify should register promptly. The cashback window closes at the end of 2026, and the qualifying-night window for the 2028 extension is already open. Before booking, it is worth confirming which properties take part, particularly among the select InterContinental hotels in Greater China and the participating luxury brands in Australia, Japan and Singapore, as the full terms rest with IHG and American Express.

For those who do qualify, the arithmetic is clear. Registration costs nothing, the status carries through 2027, 10 nights extend it through 2028, and a single qualifying stay before the year is out earns RMB 370 back. A late-December stay at a Regent or a Kimpton, planned now, would make use of both parts of the offer.
