Hotel Review
The Pavilions Phuket
Phuket · Thailand ★★★★★
A hilltop retreat built for two — private villas, west-coast views and an unhurried calm, documented in full from our stay.
Perched on one of the highest points on Phuket’s west coast, The Pavilions Phuket is the kind of hideaway you book when you want the island to yourself. There is no bustling lobby, no children splashing in a shared pool, no queue for a lounger. There is only your own villa, your own pool and a view that runs uninterrupted to the horizon. I came to see whether the resort lived up to its billing as Asia’s Best Romantic Hotel, and I left already planning a return. This is my review of The Pavilions Phuket, and of the wonderfully private 310sqm Ocean View Pool Villa I called home.

Overview
The Pavilions Phuket is an adults-focused, private-villa resort designed almost entirely around couples. Winner of the 2022 Haute Grandeur Global Excellence Award for Asia’s Best Romantic Hotel, it trades the crowds and clamour of the beachfront for a hilltop hideaway of self-contained villas, each with its own pool and its own sweeping outlook over the west of the island. It is a place built for slowing down: mornings by your own water, long lazy breakfasts and sunsets you can watch without leaving your terrace. Throughout my stay in the 310sqm Ocean View Pool Villa, that sense of unhurried privacy was the thread that ran through everything, and it is what makes The Pavilions Phuket such a natural choice for honeymooners and couples looking to escape.
Location & Getting There
The resort sits on the northern part of the island, roughly a 25-minute drive from Phuket International Airport, which makes arrival refreshingly painless after a long flight. Its elevated hillside position is the whole point: it delivers those far-reaching coastal views, though it also means you are not stepping straight onto the sand. A complimentary daily shuttle runs to a nearby beach and shopping centre for anyone who wants it. This is a retreat set apart from the walking streets, bars and busy restaurant strips, so it suits travellers who have come to unwind rather than to be in the thick of things.
Arrival sets the tone beautifully. A lush green pathway leads you up to an open-air lobby, where the team welcomed me warmly, took care of my bags and had me checked in within about ten minutes. From there, a buggy whisked me along to the villa.

The Ocean View Pool Villa
At 310 square metres, the Ocean View Pool Villa is one of the largest suites on the island, and it feels less like a hotel room than a private residence you have been handed the keys to. The pool alone is generous enough that you could happily forget the rest of the resort exists. I fell into an easy rhythm here: mornings spent by the outdoor pool after breakfast, evenings curled up in the living room with a room-service dinner and a film. The layout is clever, with the living area and bedroom separated by a bright hallway, so the space feels open and full of light while still offering a sense of retreat.

Indoors, the living space is every bit as inviting as the terrace. It is spacious and bright, with a thoughtful welcome set of sparkling wine, chocolates and fruit waiting on arrival, and it proved the ideal setting for a relaxed evening in.

The bedroom is a serene, light-filled space with a design that blends modern and classic touches, and it comes with that same glorious view. Waking up to it each morning was a genuine pleasure.

The bathroom continues the theme of quiet indulgence, with ‘his-and-hers’ vanity sinks and a bathtub framed by lush greenery, so even a long soak comes with a sense of the outdoors.

Dining
Dining at The Pavilions Phuket moves between the intimacy of your own villa and the resort’s signature Firefly Restaurant, and both are done beautifully. Over my stay I tried the celebrated floating breakfast, the buffet and a la carte breakfasts, and dinner both in the restaurant and privately in the villa.
Floating breakfast at the Ocean View Pool Villa
The floating breakfast is, unsurprisingly, one of the great pleasures of a pool villa here. A beautifully arranged tray is set to drift on your own private pool, and you wake to that view and ease into the day without ever stepping beyond your terrace. It is pure indulgence, and exactly the sort of romantic touch the resort has built its reputation on.

Breakfast at Firefly Restaurant
Breakfast proper is served at Firefly Restaurant, where a generous buffet lays out warm dishes alongside cold cuts, cheeses, salads and cereals. I found myself drawn to the a la carte menu, though, which offered far more that appealed to me and was cooked to an excellent standard. The eggs benedict and the pancakes were particular highlights.

Dinner at Firefly Restaurant
By evening, Firefly takes on a wonderfully sensual atmosphere. The menu spans regional and international dishes, and I thought the food was excellent, from the grilled salmon to the beef sandwich and a lovely pizza with Parma ham and rocket. On my second night I dined privately in the villa, which is something I would wholeheartedly recommend if you are staying in the Ocean View Pool Villa, where you can enjoy your meal in complete seclusion.

The Pavilions Spa
The Pavilions Spa is a tranquil retreat within a retreat, with a menu of therapeutic massage options and a serene setting to match. My Thai aromatic massage was wonderful, delivered by skilled therapists using their own speciality spa products, and the whole experience unfolded at the same gentle, unhurried pace as the rest of my stay. A welcome pot of tea, a considered selection of aromatic oils and a large swimming pool all add to the sense of calm.

Verdict
The Pavilions Phuket delivers exactly what it promises: a private, romantic hilltop escape for couples who want space, seclusion and a view worth flying for. Its award as Asia’s Best Romantic Hotel feels well earned. The 310sqm Ocean View Pool Villa is genuinely special, the floating breakfast and dining at Firefly are memorable, and the spa rounds out a stay built entirely around slowing down together. The one thing to weigh before you book is the setting itself: this is a hillside retreat rather than a beachfront resort, so if being able to walk straight onto the sand matters to you, factor in the complimentary shuttle to the nearby beach. For a honeymoon, an anniversary or simply a rare stretch of time to yourselves, The Pavilions Phuket is a resort I would happily return to, and one I can wholeheartedly recommend.
