Beyond, the route favours the gentler Adriatic, drifting past green Corfu, the fjord-like reach of Kotor and the sun-warmed squares of Split, before easing at last into Venice and its golden web of canals.

Athens wears its history lightly. Beneath the Acropolis and the long columns of the Parthenon, galleries, gelaterias and small boutiques share the streets with the tavernas and bouzouki bars of Plaka. As evening settles, the harbour at Piraeus draws you back, fishing boats slipping out on the salt air while a cold local beer marks the close of the day.
Volos, Greece

Volos opens onto the green flanks of Mount Pelion, the legendary haunt of Centaurs and the launching point of Jason's Argonauts. Old cobbled paths link mountain villages through eucalyptus and thyme-scented woods. Visit Damouchari among the bougainvillea and olives, Tsagarada and its ancient plane tree, or Milies, while the calm Pagasitic Gulf invites a quiet swim.
Mykonos, Greece

Arrive early and Mykonos belongs to you: a maze of whitewashed lanes, Cycladic cubes, small chapels and the line of old windmills above Chora. By afternoon, the sacred isle of Delos lies a short hop away, its amphitheatres, temples and weathered shrines emerging from the dust. Back in town, a freddo and a Greek salad reward the wandering, then a sundowner over the water.

Sit beneath the Liston's arches in the Old Town, cross the moat to the Old Fortress, and let the narrow streets fan out from Spianada Square past quiet churches. Beyond town lie the pine-clad coves of Paleokastritsa and the heights of Mount Pantokrator, with homely tavernas and unhurried meze along the way.
Kotor, Montenegro

Kotor sits deep within its Adriatic bay, jade water ringed by steep, green-crowned slopes. Behind formidable walls, the Old Town's Romanesque churches and medieval bastions recall centuries of carnival and earthquake alike. Climb toward the Church of Our Lady of Remedy for the long view over the red-tiled, UNESCO-listed rooftops, the cuisine below favouring brodetto, fresh Adriatic seafood and good gelato.
Split, Croatia

Sheltered by pine-covered hills, Split spills its terracotta roofs down to the bright Adriatic. Within the walls of Diocletian's seafront palace, a colonnaded courtyard, cathedral and winding alleys carry on the ordinary life of the city. Linger over coffee on the Riva, climb Marjan's wooded paths to a chapel and a sundowner, or join the Splicani at Bacvice for the local art of doing very little.
Fusina (Venice), Italy

Venice unfolds slowly, savoured on foot and by water. Cross its humped bridges to Piazza San Marco, the Basilica and the Doge's Palace, or slip down quieter passages between palazzi and small campi. Drift along the Grand Canal, watch Murano glass take shape, pause at the Bridge of Sighs, and let this luminous city of canals reveal itself piece by piece.

Explora's ships are all-suite and ocean-front — there isn't an inside cabin on board. Pale, calm interiors borrow the codes of the grand European hotel rather than the megaship: six restaurants plus a dozen bars and cafés, four pools including a retractable-roof Conservatory, and one of the most generous spa and thermal areas at sea. At roughly fifty gross tons per guest, the space-per-person ratio is close to double that of a mainstream cruise ship.
